Pride and Prejudice

What girl doesn't like a good chick flick from time to time? I know I do! Yesterday I had the joy of introducing the next generation of ladies to one of the best courtships of of all time. Yes, I am referring to the courtship of Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. These young ladies had seen the two hour hollywood version and really liked it but had not seen the 5 hour BBC version. Anyone who has read the book knows that the 2 hour version just doesn’t cut it and therefore I took it upon myself to make sure that they saw the longer (and far superior) version of it. :)

I don’t know how many times I have seen the movie. Too many to count. It was fun to watch it through the eyes of girls who have not seen this version before. The first time Mr. Darcy looked at Elizabeth Bennet with love and admiration in his eyes, they squealed with delight. It sure was cute.

Me and Mary

Here are some of my favorite quotes...
Mr. Darcy referring to Elizabeth Bennet: She is tolerable, I suppose, but not handsome enough to tempt me.

Miss Bingley: I remember, when we first knew her in Hertfordshire, how amazed we all were to find that she was a reputed beauty; and I particularly recollect your saying one night, after they had been dining at Netherfield, "She a beauty. - I should as soon call her mother a wit." But afterwards she seemed to improve on you, and I believe you thought her rather pretty at one time.'
Mr. Darcy: [irritated] Yes, but that was only when I first knew her. It has been many months since I considered her one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance.

Miss Bingley:
I believe I can guess your thoughts at this moment.
Mr. Darcy:
I should imagine not.
Miss Bingley:
You are thinking how insupportable it would be to spend many evenings in such tedious company.
Mr. Darcy: No, indeed, my mind was more agreeably engaged. I've been meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow.
Miss Bingley:
And may one dare ask whose the eyes that inspire these reflections?
Mr. Darcy:
Miss Elizabeth Bennet's.
Miss Bingley:
Miss Elizabeth Bennet. I am all astonishment.

And another quote from the book that I particularly like because there is so much truth to it is this... Darcy told Miss Bingley that he was thinking about Elizabeth's fine eyes. She asks him, "When am I to with you joy?" to which he responds, "A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment. I knew you would be wishing me joy."
