"Taste of China"

On Tuesday night I hosted a "Taste of China" in my home. Almost 4o ladies (including some of their daughters) from my fellowship came. It was a lot of fun for me to watch them try some of the flavors and dishes that I love so much. Many of them had never used chopsticks before. It was also a blast to watch them drink "real" Chinese tea complete with the leaves and all (or grass as one lady affectionately referred to it).

That night I gave the ladies a quiz. It was a true/false quiz. I am going to ask you some of the questions to see if you can guess the answers...

1. The Chinese staple for each meal is rice.
2. The fortune cookie originated in China.
3. The Chinese eat their soup with a spoon.
4. Most Chinese like to eat dog.
5. I have never seen an egg roll in China.

Answers:
1. True and False - Rice is the staple in southern China while noodles is the staple in Northern China.
2. False - Something similar to the fortune cookie originated in Japan. The fortune cookie as we know it actually originated in the US.
3. False - The Chinese do not eat soup...they drink it directly out of the bowl. (People will use a spoon at nicer restaurants.)
4. False - Most Chinese that I have met have never eaten dog. I have lived in China for 8 years and I have never eaten dog.
5. True - I have seen some spring rolls in the southern part of China but I have never seen egg rolls like what we eat in Chinese restaurants in America.

I saw an egg roll in Korea . . right off my counter onto the floor--what a mess!

I like your blog, Mara--it would be nice to have a chat sometime!
