Run with Perseverance Update

Ok, let me preface this by saying that I have never been a runner. If you want proof of this fact, just read my last post. I never even ran a mile in high school. Yep, I said it. I walked most of it. Well, I panted while walking for most of it that is. I always wondered why they bothered even trying to get us chubby kids to run it.

I read not long ago that a big part of running is mental. I could see that. A friend of mine also told me that the hardest part of the Couch to 5K program is getting off the couch. I totally can see that. I really dislike getting out of bed many mornings to jog. Even after several months it is hard to force myself to get out and do it.

In my last post I sad that I could only run for 3 minutes without stopping. After writing it I got this bright idea to try to see if I could run an entire mile without stopping to walk. Once again I did not tell anyone that I was going to attempt to do this. I did not want people to know I had failed. Well, to make a long story short, I did it. I ran my first mile in my life. I couldn't decide whether to be happy about it or to get really frustrated with myself that it only took me until I was 34 to run the mile. I decided to be happy.

Since then I have run a mile several times. My time is improving. I can't seem to run longer than a mile though. For now I am okay with that.  I know I will get better in time. Lets just hope it doesn't take me another 34 years to work my way up to 2 miles.

Mara, I hope your still going. You did motivate your old uncle and he is now out putting in the miles a couple days a week. Not running yet but even thinking about breaking into a run sometime.
